We’re pleased to share details from the Salute to Brooklyn Law School Icons gala that took place in the Ellis Island Great Hall, a stellar event in one of the most unique event venues in NYC. The Brooklyn Law School’s corporate event planning team certainly created an unforgettable evening for their 530 guests!
This event paid tribute to eight individuals for their extraordinary contributions to the Brooklyn Law School’s national and international reputations, as well as the excellence they bring to their own fields. The honorees included:
Professor Emeritus Joseph Crea
Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins
Professor Emeritus Richard Farrell
Associate Professor of Legal Writing Linda Feldman
Director of Admissions Henry Haverstick III , who retires at the end of June
Centennial Professor of Law Susan Herman
Centennial Professor of Law Roberta Karmel
and Aaron Twerski, the Irwin and Jill Cohen Professor of Law.
With such an awe-inspiring circle of honorees to pay tribute to in ways worthy of their esteem, the corporate event planning team filled the evening with dazzling details, engaging speakers, a stunningly impressive message from the President of the United States and First Lady, and an end-of-event surprise that delighted everyone in attendance.
During the dinner program, Master of Ceremonies CNBC Anchor Brian Sullivan introduced each honoree, presenting each with a Brooklyn Law School Icon award before an audience including the honorees’ family and friends, as well as alumni, colleagues and current students.
A highlight of the evening included special recognition for Professor Crea, who turned 100 years old in April, with his presentation featuring the reading of a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Adding extra light and joy to the event was a very special moment in which guests then held up illuminated flashlights and sang “Happy Birthday” as Dean Allard presented Professor Crea with a cake.
As the gala event came to a close, guests were treated to a spectacular fireworks display over New York Harbor, sponsored by Cushman and Wakefield. Guests were able to view the fireworks as they remained on Ellis Island, taking in the inspiring views of the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline, or as they enjoyed their ferry ride departure.
“I couldn’t help but think of how appropriate it was for that party to be held on Ellis Island,” said distinguished guest I. Leo Glasser, U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York and former Brooklyn Law School Dean, tying together our historic and unique event space and Brooklyn Law School’s history as a gateway of opportunity for immigrants and children of immigrants. “The feeling was almost palpable that those immigrant ancestors were looking down on that glorious gathering, smiling and thinking that their dream of achieving a better life was not a dream after all.”
We thank the Brooklyn Law School team for sharing these details with us, and for providing their wonderful images of this memorable event.
