Ellis Island weddings and events are known for being ultra-customized and fine-tuned for our guests. Our two islands are often home to lavish weddings and corporate events held in custom-designed tents and structures, and this celebration for Amway China’s elite associates brought a jaw-dropping custom structure to our shores, plus sensational lighting for a concert by LeeHom Wang, a Chinese superstar who was born in New York.
Janet Elkins, owner of Event Works , says, “A lot of time was spent looking for potential venues in New York and some had to be ruled out because of the size; we needed a place for 1,600 people. But what is more iconic than the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to America?”
During the cocktail celebration held on Liberty Island, guests were entertained by more than 60 different types of performers, then guests were ferried to Ellis Island for a lavish sit-down dinner in the Registry Room. As part of the celebration, birthday cakes were presented to 45 guests whose birthdays occurred close to the event date. Elkins says that it is “part of this client’s template to celebrate birthdays that take place in the month of the event.” So the 45 honored guests each received a 10” birthday cake, and ‘Happy Birthday’ was sung in Mandarin and Chinese.
Amway China’s 1,600 guests then enjoyed dinner and a celebration that encompassed both levels of the Ellis Island museum.
After dinner began a five-barge fireworks show by Grucci that was such a spectacle, it lit up Twitter and was covered on NYC news stations, followed by the performance by the wonderful Leehom Wang.

So many details went into this spectacular celebration, including the arrangement for a helicopter to be on standby in case VIP guests needed to be flown to the party.

What’s better than a wedding on an island? A wedding with stops on TWO islands! Namely, a first-stop celebration on Liberty Island — such as a cocktail party held under our custom, clear-topped tent with a view of the Statue of Liberty…and then your guests hop aboard our ferry for a scenic ride to your stunning reception on Ellis Island .
Here are some views of our Liberty Island wedding space:
For a smaller gathering, perhaps a small wedding or private celebration space after your wedding ceremony and before you make your grand entrance into the Registry Room for your wedding reception, our Conference Room offers space for your use.
Here are some scenes from events held in our Conference Room:
Ellis Island gives you the option of having a luxury outdoor wedding, or beginning your wedding celebration with an outdoor welcome party so that guests can stroll our lovely grounds, admire the breathtaking views of the city, and indulge in fabulous welcome drinks and treats.
Some of the top wedding planners and event coordinators in New York City, New Jersey and other regional spots have designed spectacular outdoor wedding parties here at Ellis Island, including superstar event planner Jung Lee of Fete . The Fete team shares some of their fabulous wedding images to inspire you with their masterful details and pretty touches to an outdoor wedding event. Thank you to Terry Gruber/Gruber Photographers :for these beautiful images.
With so much space available to you for your Ellis Iland wedding or event, you’ll enjoy the freedom to create custom bars for your guests’ enjoyment. At some of our recent Ellis Island weddings, event planners (like Zak Events’ creation above,) have designed impressive wood bars suiting a formal theme, and we’ve also seen illuminated bars set up outside on our grounds:
What is the National Park Service involvement in my event?
The National Park Service manages both Liberty and Ellis Islands. They must approve everything that occurs during your event; including date, number of guests, schedule and flow. Their approval is obtained through submitting a National Park Service application along with $75 application fee. Upon the approval of the National Park Service, a Special Use Permit will be issued for your event.
Dana and Rahul chose Ellis Island as the site for their beautiful, exotic and colorful wedding reception, with 400 of their friends and family joining in the celebration here on our grounds and in our lofty and legendary Registry Room. Their wedding was such a stunning affair that it was featured on Brides.com
The couple, who met as students at Harvard Law School, planned their elaborate wedding day to start with their Barat in Battery Park, and their NYC wedding coordinator Xochitl Gonzalez of AaB Creates ( http://www.alwaysabridesmaid.us/ ) says that their Hindu and civil ceremonies were held in Battery Gardens Restaurant, after which they and their guests boarded our ferries for a magical and scenic ride to Ellis Island, where they were greeted in fine style by our staff and welcomed into our historic venue for their celebration of a lifetime.
Their wedding details were created by a veritable Who’s Who of the finest NYC wedding vendors, including Fleurs NYC, who designed tall centerpieces of dahlias, garden roses, hydrangeas, lemon leaves, and carnations surrounded by votive candles.
The gorgeous lighting in our historic Registry Room was designed by Bestek Lighting, known for creating the breathtaking lighting effects at so many Ellis Island weddings and events, and we thank Robert Wagner Photography for sharing these images with us.

We continue our Ellis Island Wedding and Event Q&A series with this often-asked question posed by many of our wedding couples and corporate event planners:
What time can my evening event start and end?
Weddings and events begin on Ellis Island after the island’s daily operating hours, which vary depending upon the season, ranging from 5pm to 7pm. Events usually end no later than midnight, pending National Park Service approval.
